Expanding Your Horizons**        Our annual math, science & technology career conference, Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls, parents, teachers, and counselors will be held at the Engineering Center at the University of Colorado Boulder Campus on Saturday, February 25, 2012.  For the students, the conference features three hands-on workshops in science and technology fields, ranging from Physics to Veterinary Medicine, Computer Science to Meteorology.  For teachers, parents, and other attending adults, the conference features three informational workshops, in topics ranging from Planning for College to Understanding Adolescent Girls.  In 2011, of the girls who reported ethnicity, 50% were from underserved populations (Latina, African American, Other).  About half of the attendees receive scholarships to cover the registration fee.

We are currently actively seeking volunteers for the 2012 workshops, so if you love to inspire teen girls in science and/or technology fields, we would love to hear from you.  We start organizing volunteers in mid-January and hope to have gathered an enthusiastic group of 60 by mid-February.  So…SAVE THE DATE OF FEBRUARY 25, 2012 right now and you will receive confirmation by phone or email after I hear back from you about how you would like to help.  We so very much appreciate your willingness to join AAUW in our mission to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

 State/National News

The largest cost in the AAUW State budget is that of printing and mailing the AAUW Colorado State Bulletin to every branch member.   At the Fall 2011 Conference, a motion was passed to reduce costs by distributing the State bulletin in the same format as branch newsletters.  Therefore, beginning with the Fall issue of the quarterly bulletin, branches like ours who distribute our branch newsletter via email, will be responsible for distributing the State Bulletin to you via email as well.  The AAUW Colorado Winter 2011 Bulletin was e-mailed to you in December.

Scholarship Application            The Longmont Community Foundation has been busy publicizing our scholarship.  Attached is the announcement they have been e-mailing to businesses and organizations, and there was a piece in the Times-Call.  Several members have forwarded e-mails they received from a variety of sources.

Please encourage any co-workers, family or friends who qualify to log on to the LCF website and complete an application.

On Saturday, February 11th, 2012, 9:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, DKG welcomes you to hear Kristina Kafka, a music educator and Fulbright recipient for study in China, who wanted to give back to the country where she studied, so she spent 3 years teaching in Chinese schools. Kristina has wonderful experiences and photo slide show to share about her teaching and ‘her’ Chinese students.  She also sponsors two young women college students in China.  (Photo by permission:  Photographs by Jim, Floresville, Tx).  Kristina submitted her Fulbright Curriculum project in 2006, entitled Curriculum Project:  Tradition and Transformation, Peking Opera.
Her magnetic personality will draw you into this presentation and help you in learning about the Chinese educational system as she experienced it.  Active in Colorado theater, Kristina received the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the Alliance for Colorado Theater.   Kristina, who currently teaches elementary music,  is a DKG member from Colorado Springs and is being sponsored by the local DKG Mu Chapter.

Greeters from AAUW and DKG will welcome you and sign you in.                                          Light refreshments will be provided by AAUW Hostesses.

As an added treat, Kristina, who has directed high school choirs, traveled with her students to Europe, done performances in stage productions and studied opera, will present an original song entitled  ”A Teachers’ Song.”

Please plan to attend and bring a friend or two.                                                                              This will be a really good meeting.
